Fabulation or the Reeducation of Undine is a 2005 OBIE Award winning play for Best new American Play written by two time Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Lynn Nottage. Originally produced at Playwrights Horizon in 2004, the play had a 2018 Off Broadway Revival. It consists of a fast paced sequel of over twelve scenes in fifteen different location changes, featuring up to thirty characters all centered around the titular character, Undine.
The play ran at the Hudson Theaters under my direction of five actors that developed an individual roster of 4-7 characters each through theater games and improvisations. Rehearsal took on a clown based exploration, using movement and sound as primary means of expression and development of character.
Along with a producing partner, rights for Fabulation were secured from Dramatists Play Service, theater scouting through Hollywood began and auditions were held to find a group of actors that could empathetically approach the humor laden social commentary that is the play.
Above are narrative boards for my initial interpretation of the story, what Undine's journey meant to me and how I felt we could express the world Lynn Nottage had created. It was really a story about hope to me, and embracing personal identity. It seemed really necessary to explore abandonment and embrace of oneself simultaneously. The play ran for twelve shows at the Hudson Theater and we had the opportunity to welcome a previous Undine from the 2018 Broadway Revival to our final weekend. A critic review is shared below.
